In an exclusive sit-down, we delve deep into the world of TheyWantNick, a rising star from Somerset, New Jersey, whose latest single “Move On” has captured hearts and playlists. Here’s what he had to share:
Can you share a little about your background and how you got started in music?
TheyWantNick: “I’m from a small town in central Jersey called Somerset. I grew up playing basketball my entire life. When I retired after I got done with school, I took up acting and then transitioned into doing music since the two go hand in hand. A coworker of mine gave me the opportunity to record, and I immediately knew that I wanted to take it seriously.”
Who or what are your biggest musical influences, and how do they shape your sound?
TheyWantNick: “As a kid, my first intro to music was Michael Jackson. He’s always been my GOAT. As I got older, I felt like I related to artists like Drake, The Weeknd, and Post Malone. The versatility of all of those artists is how I wanted to be looked at as a musician. I feel like they can do anything in terms of what vibe they want a song to have.”
Could you walk us through your creative process? How do you go from an idea to a finished song?
TheyWantNick: “It really depends on what’s going on in my life at the time. I think it all starts with a beat. The beat has to catch my attention first just like it would whoever’s listening. Then I go into melodies and lyrics, etc.”
“Move On” is a captivating track. Can you share the story or inspiration behind this song?
TheyWantNick: “Move On is actually the first song I ever wrote, believe it or not. My producer for the track sent me the beat and about 3 hours later it was done. I felt like it would be perfect because everyone has been in some sort of situation where they felt they had to leave knowing it would be difficult.”
How would you describe your musical style, and how has it evolved over time?
TheyWantNick: “I’m definitely versatile. I think that’s the best way to describe my style. I like to go from hip-hop to R&B to pop. Those were my favorite genres growing up so I like that lane the most. I think since I’ve started my creativity has just gotten even better.”
What has been the most challenging aspect of working in the music industry, and how have you navigated it?
TheyWantNick: “Finances. Music is expensive. Especially if you’re an independent artist funding your own work. Outside of that, probably just networking and putting your art out there for people to see is probably the next most challenging part.”
With the digital age reshaping the music industry, how do you engage with your audience and stand out in a crowded space?
TheyWantNick: “I’m always looking for feedback. I know at the end of the day the only opinion that matters is mine since it’s my work, but I love to hear what people have to say because I want to make art that people can relate to. As an artist, you’re nothing without your fans.”
What advice would you give to aspiring musicians trying to make their mark?
TheyWantNick: “Save your money up! And try to build a team around you that’s gonna believe in your art. It’s hard to do all of this by yourself.”
Nick’s grounded approach to his music and his career shines through in his thoughtful responses. With “Move On” and his versatile musical style, TheyWantNick is not just another artist in the hip hop scene; he’s a storyteller, a dreamer, and most importantly, an inspiration to many.
