Though he’s confined within the four walls of a studio, saxophonist and producer Ja.i immerses himself in a world of sound, weaving intricate melodies that resonate with the soul.
Behind each track lies a story, a journey of creativity and inspiration that unfolds with every note. As he reflects on his latest release, “I.T.B. (In The Beginning)” Ja.i shares insights into the process behind his music and his vision for the future.
“For this release, man I started with listening to different loops and sounds to kind of figure out what I wanted to create on that specific day,” Ja.i recalls of his creative process for the record.
With the help of his literal inherent collaborator, his toddler son, Ja.i explains how their natural father-son dynamic organically influenced “I.T.B.” And made it to the Final Cut in a very real way.
“My son happened to be in the room with me so it’s kind of hard to be structured in my approach while watching him.”
But as the music takes shape throughout the smooth rolling release, Ja.i delves deeper into his creative process, seeking to capture the essence of his vision.
“Once I found a good groove, I was looking to just jam out to see what came out of it,” he explains. “After a few different takes I was then able to find a melody that I felt would be good to center my track around.”
One of the standout moments in the track, Ja.i reveals, is a subtle movement that resonated deeply with him.
“Outside of my son talking baby talk, haha, it has to be the little movement I did at 2:33-2:34,” he shares. “I felt it so much that you can hear me in the background singing with it if you listen closely.”
Drawing inspiration from his family and his faith, Ja.i infuses his music with a sense of purpose and meaning. While actual lyricism isn’t predominantly present on “I.T.B.” The music itself, in a sense, serves as a narrative tool for him.
“Honestly my family embodies this record man,” he reflects. “My mom and dad really pushed for me to play the sax even though I was more interested in the drums.”
Looking ahead, Ja.i envisions a future filled with creativity and collaboration. “In the future, my plan is continue creating instrumentals, vocal tracks, producing, albums, songwriting… finding placements in different artistic ways,” he reveals. “But honestly, I want my music and my music career to be useful with purpose, providing good music to whoever listens.”
