On the Rise: Bishop, a Neo-Soul Artist

From the Bronx, New York, a Neo-Soul artist named Bishop hit the music industry this year. As a young singer, the soul genre had always captivated him, leading to Neo-Soul becoming his artistic style. Similar to his artist name, he became “Bishop” following his birth, as his oldest sister gave him the nickname based on her favorite film at the time, Juice. The name was so fitting, it stuck with him since.

Becoming an artist has not been a smooth ride for Bishop, as he had to overcome his own self-doubt. He felt that his slow and sentimental soul style would be difficult to appeal to the general public, given that today’s popular artists are majority rappers or pop stars.

However, over this past summer, Bishop was able to eliminate that doubt with the help of producer Hendrick Douglass. Douglass pushed Bishop to join the music industry and to create and release his own music, giving him the confidence to do so.

In October, the two released Bishop’s first single, “All of Me.” This song is based on Bishop’s real-life experience in a pleasant romantic relationship.

“Being able to speak about the positive of love, especially in music, is such a peaceful feeling, and ‘All of Me’ expresses me giving all of myself to a beautiful love and keeping it close,” Bishop said.

As of now, Bishop remains an independent artist; however, he is open to signing with the right label when the time comes. Bishop is also interested in acting and says it is one of his goals for the next five years, along with putting on more performances.

Although Bishop may have more goals he is aiming to achieve, his biggest accomplishment is being able to say he is chasing his dreams. For those who may be in the same situation as Bishop, he says to turn your failures into motivation to reach those goals you have.

“Believe in yourself… Trust your process, use your failure as motivation to add to your story book toward success,” said Bishop.
