Walking in Purpose: Taneka Walker is Changing the Face of Alopecia Awareness and Women’s Wellness

The founder of Walker Wellness & Aesthetics Clinic and a board-certified nurse practitioner, Walker is many things, a veteran, a healer, a mentor, and a fierce advocate for women with alopecia. But above all, she is a woman walking in purpose, determined to help others heal through truth, transparency, and transformation.

July, recognized as International Women with Alopecia Month, offers a timely platform for Walker’s message. For her, the fight against stigma surrounding hair loss is both professional and deeply personal. She knows what it feels like to face a mirror and see your identity shifting. She also knows what it takes to rebuild from the inside out and she’s made it her mission to help others do the same.

Walker’s path to becoming a trusted voice in the wellness space began in the U.S. Air Force, where she served as a medical assistant. That chapter planted the seeds for a lifelong commitment to service. She went on to earn her BSN from Wright State University and later an MSN, becoming a certified Family Nurse Practitioner. Her 20+ year career spans correctional medicine and public health, including frontline service during the COVID-19 pandemic.

But it was her own experience with alopecia and facial scarring that ignited a different kind of fire, one that led her to open the doors of Walker Wellness & Aesthetics in Houston, a space where healing is as much about confidence as it is about care.

“We don’t just treat symptoms,” Walker says. “We help people rediscover their power. We help them feel seen.”

Her clinic provides a unique combination of primary care, advanced aesthetic treatments, and customized wellness plans. For women experiencing hair loss whether from traction, autoimmune conditions, or hormonal factors the clinic offers non-surgical options such as PRP therapy, exosomes (stem cell therapy), low-level laser treatments, and medical-grade serums. Walker and her team focus on educating clients, ensuring every treatment is rooted in science and personalized support.

But it’s her ability to make people feel at home that sets the clinic apart.

“When women come to us for help with alopecia, they’re not just looking for regrowth. They’re looking for reassurance. They want to feel whole again. And they deserve that,” Walker says.

Beyond the treatment room, Walker’s impact continues. She’s a mentor to young women entering healthcare and entrepreneurship, and she runs an apparel brand designed to uplift nurses and frontline professionals. Her advocacy is holistic, a fusion of career, community, and calling.

Her message during International Women with Alopecia Month is simple but powerful: there is no shame in your story.

With more than 6.8 million people affected by alopecia areata in the United States alone, Walker believes conversations around hair loss must evolve. “We have to normalize it, not hide from it,” she says. “There’s beauty in our differences. And strength in owning every part of your journey.”

She also encourages women to prioritize nutrition, mental wellness, and daily habits that support long-term health, not just aesthetics. She personally recommends supplements like Nutrafol and uses DeRIVE shampoo and conditioner along with her clinic’s custom-formulated growth serums.

“Hair may fall out, but your spirit doesn’t have to,” Walker says. “Confidence isn’t found in products. It’s built through knowledge, support, and learning to love yourself — bald spots and all.”

As the month unfolds, she hopes more women begin to speak up, seek help, and let go of the shame surrounding hair loss.

Because for Taneka Walker, International Women with Alopecia Month isn’t just about awareness. It’s about awakening — to possibility, to healing, and to a deeper sense of self.

And she’s here to remind every woman: your power is never tied to what’s on your head. It’s rooted in what’s in your heart.
